The only identifying detail in this record is the name Witherspoon, a title taken from Bain News Service labels that has not been independently verified, so the subject is best understood through the agency that made the picture. Bain News Service was a New York news photography operation founded by George Grantham Bain around 1899. It supplied pictures of current events, public figures and city life to newspapers and magazines. Its glass negatives, made for fast daily publication, capture the pace of early twentieth-century news photography, and the Library of Congress later acquired the collection.
