Here a man stands beside a telephone operator, a pairing that reflects how central the switchboard had become to daily business and home life in the early 1900s. The record does not identify either sitter or give a date, so the scene can only be placed within the broader period of the Bain News Service, the New York agency founded by George Grantham Bain that sold news pictures to newspapers from about 1899 into the 1920s. Telephone exchanges of that era were typically staffed by women operators, and images like this one help show the working conditions and the new technology of the period.
