The record does not name the sitter or give a date, so this glass negative of an unidentified soldier can only be placed in general terms. It came from the Bain News Service, the New York picture agency George Grantham Bain founded around 1899 to sell news photographs to newspapers. Plates like this one were made for quick reproduction, so a portrait was often taken for a caption and a page layout rather than as a keepsake. Because the title is unverified, the most useful things to notice are the uniform and pose, which reflect the steady press demand for images of servicemen in the early twentieth century.
