The subjects of this glass negative are unidentified, and the record gives no date or location, so the picture's exact origin remains uncertain. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of negatives from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Photographs like this one were often taken quickly for daily publication, so they capture ordinary street, home, or public scenes of their time. Because the sitters are not named, the image is most useful as a glimpse of everyday life in the period, with its clothing and setting offering clues to when it was made.
