Few pictures in the Bain collection show wartime labor as directly as this view of women working on an aircraft propeller in England. The record gives no date, but the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, was active in the years around the First World War, when British aircraft works employed many women to replace men who had gone to the front. Early propellers were often made of laminated wood and finished by hand, so the scene shows both the skill the work demanded and the shift in who was doing it. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact site and date remain open.
