The caption names Lt. Paul Micelli and H. Sundstent, but the record gives no date or setting, so the occasion behind this picture is unclear. It survives as a glass negative, the format used by Bain News Service, the New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, which relied on such plates from the late 1890s into the 1920s. The agency sent pictures to newspapers quickly, so captions were sometimes written from information supplied at the time and never checked afterward. The names should be read as the agency's own unverified identification.
