Boston's Tremont Street subway, shown here in construction during June 1896, was the first subway built in the United States. The city dug a trench beneath Tremont Street near Boston Common so streetcars could run out of sight of the street traffic above, and the line opened in September 1897. This print carries a later date, about 1936, and a copyright notice in the name of E.B. Dennison of Medford, Massachusetts, so it is probably a reproduction of the 1896 view. The work shows the open cut and the crude engineering of a project that changed how Boston moved its traffic.
