Titled with the Latin form of his name, *Christophorus Columbus*, this print presents the navigator who sailed for Spain in 1492 and reached the Caribbean that October. Its copyright entry dates to January 1892, placing it in the run-up to the 400th anniversary of that voyage, which prompted many commemorative portraits and prints in the United States. The record also associates the piece with a name, Lefort, taken from an older shelflist card, though that attribution is unverified. Americans used Columbus's story in these years to celebrate national progress, and images like this one helped shape how he was remembered.
