The Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the federal agency that designs and prints the nation's paper currency and many other securities, is the subject of this view. It was taken on a glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1925, a period when the National Photo Company, a commercial studio, recorded Washington's streets, monuments and government offices. Glass plates like this one preserve fine tonal detail, though the coating may show streaks and blemishes from age.
