Few buildings in Washington are as closely tied to daily American life as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Treasury agency that designs and prints paper currency and many federal securities. This glass negative, made by the National Photo Company between about 1910 and 1925, records the bureau's Washington site at a time when the company was photographing the capital's government buildings for wide circulation. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the plate, which the record attributes to deterioration in its original coating, and these marks are part of what the negative now shows.
