Here the Washington Monument rises above the Potomac River, a pairing that captured the capital's appeal to photographers in the early twentieth century. The obelisk was completed in 1884 and opened to visitors in 1888, and by the 1910s it was the city's most recognizable landmark. This glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, which produced many views of Washington for tourists and postcard publishers, and it dates from roughly 1910 to 1926. Look closely and you may notice streaks and blemishes, the result of the emulsion coatings deteriorating over time.
