The Bureau of Printing and Engraving was the federal agency that produced the nation's paper currency, postage stamps, and other securities, and this view records its Washington, D.C. building during the years the National Photo Company was documenting the city's government offices. The company, active in the 1910s and early 1920s, sold views of Washington's landmarks to tourists and institutions, so its images capture how the capital presented itself to the public in that era. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the breakdown of its original coating, which give the image a faintly mottled texture that is worth noticing alongside the architecture.
