Among the portraits in this collection, this one is set apart by its title, which names the Russian-born painter Mark Rothko. In 1936 he was living and working in New York, years before he became known for the large color fields of his mature paintings. The work is a drypoint, made by scratching lines directly into a metal plate with a needle, which leaves a soft burr that gives the strokes a velvety depth. This impression is numbered 3 of 60 and signed in pencil, and the Library of Congress acquired it by purchase through the Pennell fund.
