Bull V is the fifth panel in a set of six bulls, numbered 60 of 100 and signed and dated by hand in pencil. The caption card dates it to 1973, though that detail is unverified, and the series is generally associated with the mid-1980s, when Roy Lichtenstein turned to Pablo Picasso's famous sequence of bull lithographs from the 1940s. Picasso's studies strip a bull down step by step to a few bold lines, and Lichtenstein borrows that process, reducing the animal to flat color and simplified contour. The print is worth studying for how it joins two artists' approaches, using a pop vocabulary to revisit an older exercise in reduction.
