*Message from a desert star* is a 1972 aquatint by Mark Tobey, the American painter known for his "white writing" style of dense, calligraphic lines drifting across a surface. This impression is numbered 9 of an edition of 96 and is signed and dated in pencil, with a blind stamp from Edition Beauclair of Frankfurt am Main. Tobey had long been drawn to Asian calligraphy, and the print shows how he applied that linear vocabulary to an etched plate. The caption card that supplies these details is old and unverified, so the edition and printer information should be checked against other sources.
