A satirical engraving of James G. Blaine, the Republican politician, ran in the January 16, 1888, issue of *The Daily Graphic*, an illustrated New York daily. Blaine had been Secretary of State and was the Republican nominee who lost the 1884 presidential election to Grover Cleveland, so by early 1888 he remained a prominent figure in his party. The title, *Hereditary Instinct*, suggests a joke about inherited habits in political behavior, a common device of the period's cartoonists. The catalog data come from an old caption card, so the specific point the drawing makes is best confirmed in the published issue itself.
