Camels loaded for a long desert journey, with Bedouin herders as the figures tagged in its catalog record, mark this as a view of Arabia rather than a generic desert scene. The print comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection at the Library of Congress. Frank Carpenter was an American travel writer who reported from many parts of the world for newspapers, and his photographs were made to illustrate that reporting. Camel caravans were the principal way goods and people crossed the Arabian interior at the time, so the picture records a working transport system as much as a landscape.
