Few places in the Caribbean carry a darker record than St. Pierre, and this stereograph shows its rum district roughly a year after the town was destroyed. In May 1902, the eruption of Mount Pelée devastated the port and killed an estimated 28,000 people, most within minutes. Before that disaster, St. Pierre was a center of Martinique's rum trade, and the card's catalog tags, which include liquor industry and disasters, reflect both parts of its story. Keystone View Company stereo cards like this one were sold to American viewers eager to see distant places.
