Views of Martinique after the eruption of Mt. Pelée show the island in the aftermath of one of the deadliest volcanic disasters on record. In May 1902, Mount Pelée erupted, and a fast-moving cloud of hot gas and ash destroyed the port city of Saint-Pierre, killing tens of thousands of residents. Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereograph cards in large numbers, issued scenes like this one for home viewers eager to see distant news in three dimensions. The caption card files it under geography and disasters, a reminder that the event was treated as both a natural history lesson and a public spectacle.
