Pierre Laval, the French foreign minister, is shown speaking before the League of Nations in Geneva, a setting that dominated European diplomacy in the mid-1930s. The Associated Press print is dated September 1935, when Italy's invasion of Ethiopia was drawing sharp debate in the League's assembly. Laval was a central figure in the efforts to reach a settlement, and his later career as a Vichy leader during the Second World War made him one of the most controversial men of his generation.
