Cézanne returned to the subject of bathers for most of his career, and this color lithograph shows the figures in a landscape setting that drew on the classical nudes he studied in the Louvre. The record dates it only to the 1890s, a decade when he was reworking the theme in oil and watercolor, pursuing a method of building form from patches of color rather than from line and shading. Printed images like this one carried his compositions to viewers who could not see the paintings, and they help explain why his late work came to shape modern art. Notice how the bodies seem to merge with the trees and earth around them.
