A residence at the corner of 14th Street and Clifton in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, though the place name comes from the studio's own label and has not been independently checked. The picture belongs to the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented the capital in the early twentieth century, producing street views and building photographs for postcards, publications and civic use. Because its glass plates were made to be printed in quantity, they now offer a useful record of everyday residential streets in 1913. The plate shows streaks and spots from the emulsion breaking down over the decades, a natural effect of aging that affects the image's clarity.
