Few monuments in New York have attracted printmakers as steadily as the arch at the foot of Fifth Avenue in Washington Square, and this 1923 etching shows it as the city's artists knew it. Stanford White designed the arch, which first went up in temporary form in 1889 to mark the centennial of Washington's inauguration in New York, and a permanent marble version followed in 1892. This impression is from an edition of 100 and is signed in pencil. The plate reached its fifth state before printing, a sign of the careful, collectible printmaking that flourished in the 1920s.
