Here, a Washington portrait serves as a commercial label for fabric. The title, "Full Madder Colors," points to cloth dyed with madder, a red dye made from the roots of the madder plant and long valued for printed calicoes and cotton goods. The engraving was made by M. H. Traubel of Philadelphia, a city with a large textile trade in the nineteenth century. Its undated card places it somewhere between 1830 and 1900, a range inferred from similar product labels of that era. Such labels used familiar national figures to lend a sense of trust and patriotism to everyday goods.
