Washington Arch in winter shows the monument at the foot of Fifth Avenue in New York City, with the square around it likely blanketed in snow and the bare trees of the park showing through. The arch began as a temporary plaster structure for the 1889 centennial of Washington's inauguration as president, which took place in lower Manhattan. Its permanent marble version, designed by the architect Stanford White, was completed in 1892 and quickly became one of the city's best-known landmarks. The lithograph's winter setting is worth noticing, since it captures a quieter side of a monument usually shown in summer crowds.
