Here Washington hands Captain John Barry his commission, a scene the caption dates to February 22, 1797, the day the new Navy's senior officer was formally commissioned. Barry had served in the Continental Navy during the Revolution and went on to command the frigate *United States*, one of the first ships of the reestablished American navy. The print itself is dated about 1840, decades after the event, so it shows how later audiences chose to remember the young republic's founding years. The record notes that its details are unverified, and an associated name, Duval, appears on the shelflist card.
