Few mid-1930s views of San Diego look down on the harbor as directly as this aerial study of the waterfront, which the caption card links to the Navy, hotels and the working edge of the bay. By about 1935, San Diego had grown into a major Pacific port, with naval vessels and facilities occupying much of the shoreline and hotels rising in the downtown district nearby. Harry A. Erickson registered the photoprint for copyright, and the record's subject headings point to the same mix of military, commercial and civic life that shaped the city's waterfront in those years. Looking closely at the piers and rooftops shows how tightly the harbor and town were bound together.
