The altar of Saint Francis of Assisi is the focus here, set within the church of San Diego in Churubusco, a former village on the southern edge of Mexico City that is now part of the capital. Churubusco gained lasting fame in 1847, when its convent and church were fortified and fought over during the Mexican-American War. The photographer is recorded only as Kahlo, most likely Guillermo Kahlo, who documented many of the city's colonial churches and their interiors. The caption card gives no date, so the image is best read as a record of the church's furnishings, with its carved and gilded altarpiece, rather than of a specific moment.
