The Hotel del Coronado, the sprawling Victorian resort on the Coronado peninsula across from San Diego, is the subject of this aerial view, taken around 1935. The hotel opened in 1888 and quickly became a fashionable winter destination, drawing guests who arrived by rail and by ferry across San Diego Bay. From the air, its striking red roofs, turrets and wide lawns stand out against the bright shoreline and the beach it fronts. The photograph was made by Harry A. Erickson, whose copyrighted image is listed in the Library of Congress record, and it captures the resort at a time when aerial photography was becoming a popular way to document the seaside landmark.
