An aerial view of San Diego Bay looks down on a waterfront that was still taking shape in the mid-1930s, when the city's harbor and downtown were growing fast. The photograph was taken by H.A. Erickson and dated to around December 17, 1934, though the catalog notes that this date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. From above, the bay's curving shoreline, the working piers, and the street grid of the city's core are easy to trace. Aerial pictures from this period are especially useful for seeing how the harbor and the city fit together before later expansion changed them.
