Few Mexican place names are as literal as Aguascalientes, which means "hot waters" and refers to the warm springs in the area. This view centers on the Church of San Diego and the plaza before it, a pairing common in Mexican towns, where the church and open square anchored daily life. The photograph comes from W.H. Jackson & Co., whose studio produced many views of Mexico in the 1880s and 1890s, and whose negatives later passed into the Detroit Publishing Company's holdings. The glass negative records how a provincial town looked near the end of the nineteenth century, before the upheavals of the Mexican Revolution.
