The ship CUYAMACA was a concrete steamer, and this glass negative records its launch at San Diego, one of the few concrete hulls of its kind to be built on the Pacific coast. During the First World War, when steel was scarce, the U.S. Shipping Board turned to reinforced concrete for cargo vessels, and San Diego's yards took part in that effort. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency in New York, produced negatives like this one for sale to newspapers and magazines. The record does not give a date, and the title comes from the agency's own notes, so the exact launch day is unconfirmed.
