Alfred Dwight Foster Hamlin, an American who was about twenty-five when he made this drawing, sits for a graphite portrait sketched during his travels in France. The setting is Amiens, the northern French city whose thirteenth-century Gothic cathedral drew architecture students and sketchers throughout the nineteenth century. Hamlin later became known as a writer and teacher of architectural history, and the drawing reflects the habit of careful travel sketching that shaped that work. It is a leaf from a sketchbook, and its 1880 date is an estimate based on similar drawings in the same book.
