An elk frozen mid-leap is the particular subject here, and the title's phrase "made captive" suggests an animal taken alive, a twist on the hunting trophy that "hunter's delight" seems to promise. The word "instantaneous" points to the fast shutter speeds that had become practical by the late 1880s, letting a camera stop a jump the eye could not follow. Printed on a stereo card, the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the animal a sense of depth in the parlor. The record names no photographer or location.
