The title, cut off after "Fighting in France for," places this picture on the Western Front in 1918, the last full year of the war. That spring, Germany launched a series of offensives aimed at breaking the Allied lines before American troops arrived in large numbers, and the fighting that followed was among the most intense of the conflict. Allied armies, reinforced by growing American forces, pushed back through the summer and autumn until the armistice took effect on 11 November 1918. Photographs from this period often show soldiers in trenches, villages wrecked by shelling, and the scarred landscapes of northern and eastern France.
