This poster, numbered 19 in the United States Food Administration's series, asks Americans to send food to a France at war: "War rages in France. We must feed them." Its slogan adds that civilians cannot fight and raise food at the same time, and that denying ourselves a little means life to those who are suffering. Issued in 1917, after the United States entered the war, it was part of a campaign led by Herbert Hoover to conserve wheat, meat, and fats so that surplus could go to the Allies and to refugees displaced by fighting. The Food Administration relied on appeals like this one rather than rationing at first, and its voluntary pledges reached homes across the country.
