Its line, "Four years in the fight," counts the war from its 1914 start, and the appeal credits the women of France with the "houses of cheer" that welcomed American servicemen. The poster was issued for the United War Work Campaign, a combined 1918 drive that raised money for several wartime welfare organizations, and this sheet promotes the Young Women's Christian Association. The YWCA ran hostess houses and canteens where troops could rest, write letters, and find some comfort away from the front. The lithograph is signed by L. Jonas, one of the many illustrators who turned wartime fundraising into bold, eye-catching color art.
