Albert Sterner, an American illustrator known for his magazine work, designed this 1917 lithograph for the United States Food Administration, the wartime agency Herbert Hoover directed to encourage Americans to eat less of the foods needed overseas. The title points to a specific appeal: American milk was to be sent to France, where infants and young children faced shortages after years of fighting. Posters like this one asked households to conserve so that food could reach Allied civilians and soldiers. It shows how the home front was enlisted in the war effort through ordinary choices at the kitchen table.
