Shooters at the firing line, where competitors took their positions to fire toward distant targets, are the subject of this glass negative from the National Photo Company. The title comes from unverified data, but the setting fits the National Matches, the annual marksmanship competitions that drew military and civilian shooters to ranges such as Camp Perry in Ohio. The Washington, D.C., firm made many thousands of negatives in the early twentieth century, and this one dates to roughly 1908 to 1919. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating, which is part of what makes the plate worth examining closely.
