The name on this glass negative, Eddie Foster, comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress has not verified it. The company, which worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, photographed people and street life across the city, and its glass plates were later donated to the library. The plate is dated only to a range between 1908 and 1919, based on neighboring negatives. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes caused by the natural breakdown of the original emulsion, which give the surface a mottled texture.
