Built by Franciscan friars in Brookland, Northeast Washington, beginning around 1899, the monastery grew into a complex of buildings and gardens used for study and devotion. It is known for its outdoor replicas of Holy Land shrines, which let visitors visit sites associated with Jerusalem without leaving the District. The National Photo Company made this glass negative sometime between 1908 and 1919, during the monastery's early decades of expansion. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coating, and they give the image a worn, uneven texture worth noticing.
