In 1917, Wisconsin was a state of dairy farms, cutover pine country, paper and lumber mills, and factories in the larger cities, and its National Guard was one of the first state forces drawn into the nation's war. The United States entered the First World War in April of that year, and that spring and summer Guard companies were mustered, equipped, and sent to training camps as federal troops. Ambulance Company No. 1 was a medical unit meant to collect wounded men from the front and carry them to field hospitals, a role that drew on the same farm boys, mechanics, and town men who made up much of the state's Guard. Photographs like this one were often made for the men themselves, for their families back home, and for communities that followed the local company's departure with pride and worry.
