Chilton, the seat of Calumet County in east-central Wisconsin, was in 1919 a farm town whose economy rested on dairy herds, cheese making, and the grain and livestock that moved through local markets. The photograph records a homecoming for young men from the county who had served in the United States armed forces during the First World War, which ended in November 1918. Across Wisconsin that year, towns held such welcomes as men were mustered out, and many families were still grieving those lost to the war and to the influenza epidemic of 1918. For the residents who gathered for the event, the day marked a return to normal rural life, with its farm work, church and civic gatherings, and the familiar rhythms of the county seat.
