The Mission on Madeline Island, Wisconsin, in 1915 showed a settlement with a long history on Lake Superior. La Pointe, the village at the island's north end, grew out of the fur trade and the Ojibwe communities who had lived around Chequamegon Bay for generations, and Protestant and Catholic missionaries founded churches there in the 1830s and 1840s. By 1915 the island's economy rested mainly on fishing, small farming, and summer visitors who arrived by ferry and steamer from Bayfield and Ashland, where lumber mills and ore docks drove the wider regional economy. Islanders of that time knew the mission grounds as a place tied to their earliest days, and the village's past was a source of local pride as the region's industries shifted around them.
