Odanah, on the Bad River Reservation in Ashland County, Wisconsin, was in 1915 the main village of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, whose homeland lies where the Bad River meets Chequamegon Bay. By then decades of logging and land sales under federal allotment policy had cut deeply into reservation timber and land, and many families depended on wage work in the lumber camps and mills, fishing, wild rice harvests, and small farms. The nearby city of Ashland, with its rail lines and ore and lumber docks on Lake Superior, drew much of the region's commerce and outside attention. For the people who lived in Odanah, the village was known as a community of tribal life and church ties, set apart from the boom towns along the lake shore.
