This glass negative from the Bain News Service shows Molla Bjurstedt, the Norway-born tennis player who became one of the most dominant women's players of the 1910s and early 1920s. She won the U.S. national women's singles title several times and was known for her steady, patient baseline game, which set her apart from the more aggressive net play of many rivals. Later in her career she married Franklin Mallory and competed as Molla Mallory. The record does not give a date, and the name comes from the agency's own caption, so it is worth checking against other sources. Bain's studio photographed many public figures of the period, and portraits like this one document how sports celebrities were presented to newspaper readers.
