A glass negative captioned simply as a British seaplane, with a title taken from Bain News Service caption cards that were never independently verified, so the specific aircraft and date remain uncertain. Naval services in Britain and elsewhere used seaplanes and flying boats for coastal reconnaissance and patrol in the early twentieth century, most intensively during the First World War. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain, supplied newspapers with news photographs in those early decades, so the image reflects the press interest in aviation of that era.
