Captioned as British armored autos in France, this glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact moment is uncertain, but the subject suggests the First World War, when British armored car units operated on the Western Front. Those vehicles, often built on commercial or Rolls-Royce chassis and armed with machine guns, were used for reconnaissance and for patrolling roads behind the lines. The title comes from agency data that has not been verified, so it is best read as the label the agency gave the image.
