The bridge at Meaux, a town on the Marne east of Paris, was blown up by French engineers in the early weeks of World War I, as German forces pressed toward the capital. Demolishing river crossings was a common way to slow an invading army and give defenders time to regroup, and the fighting along the Marne in September 1914 turned on such delays. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sent images of wartime scenes like this one to American newspapers, so the negative shows how the damage was presented to readers abroad. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact date of the photograph is uncertain.
