Identified only by a caption card as Judge Wm. Williams, this portrait has no verified date, so its name and setting should be treated as leads rather than settled fact. George Grantham Bain's New York agency supplied newspapers with news pictures and portraits of public figures in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives record that busy press trade. Judges and other officials were common subjects because editors wanted recognizable faces beside their stories.
